Your volunteer is invited to take a small gift, a small wood box, which once belonged to a witch.
Now you invite the volunteer to cut a deck of cards. The cut cards are left in view as you explain that there is always a price to pay for a gift such as this.
The volunteer is told to place the card they cut to face down on the table then to open the box and read the small parchment that is inside. It is found to say, “Whoever chooses the Seven of Diamonds will die this very night”.
With the chosen card remaining in full view but face down you invite the volunteer to examine the rest of the deck, reminding them of the price they have to pay for the gift. They examine the deck and find that all the cards are in fact the seven of diamonds!
“I did warn you” you say and invite them to confront their fate by turning over their chosen card. They do so and find that it is the Jack of Hearts (for example)! Just look how close to death they came!
Of course, you will adjust the presentation to suit the one-way deck and contrasting card that you have.
