The occultist says that to prove that he is no mere conjurer he will let the audience in on one of the basic principles of true magic. That of the ‘Naming of Names’.
He explains about voodoo and other practices requiring the true name of the victim to gain power over them. A set of Tarot cards is handed out, and one is chosen by the volunteer. The name of the card is written on a piece of parchment paper and given to another spectator to hold.
The chosen card, which is not known to the occultist, is mixed back into the pack by the volunteer and they are then given an indifferent card to hold. The occultist recites an incantation. The paper with the hidden name vanishes in a flash of fire and the card in the volunteer's hand changes into the chosen card.
PDF version which includes instructions so you can make the effect yourself. You will need to provide a deck of Rider-Waite Tarot cards and some flash paper.
