This is another of the effects that is in every performance. It is based on one of my favourite effects 'Fred the Red'. I have been doing this one for a long time and now it has become a real old faithful.
Sign of Satan uses a female volunteer whom you put through a witchcraft trial. Just for fun of course! This one can be done stand up or as a strolling close-up effect.
The performer gets the volunteer to name any playing card out loud. They have a free choice (no force). The card named is noted.
The performer then tells of how in the Middle Ages playing cards were banned throughout Europe as the Church said that they were the playthings of Satan. He goes on to tell that it is said that Satan marks a card in every deck and, that the only people who know which card is marked by Satan are the Evil One himself and those in league with him. This fact was used as a trial for witchcraft. The person suspected of being a witch was asked to name a card and if that card was marked by Satan, then the fate of the subject was execution.
The occultist says that just for fun they will imagine that the volunteer is on trial for witchcraft. Of course, the card that they previously named turns out to be the only red backed card in a blue backed deck and it has the word SATAN written on the back of it.
